Ruth C. Elgart

Artist Statement

Wood is an organic medium in which I try to employ its feeling of life and sensuousness. I carve exotic woods, using the human figure as a vehicle to express quiet contemplation and serenity. While still dealing mainly with figurative sculpture, I am branching out in groupings expressing the moods and issues of contemporary society. Vis a vis a more abstract rendering of the wood, I am using negative space and careful placement of the figures to depict timelessness, interior strength and universality.

When I work, I think only of the creative process--the baring of my soul. Thoughts of creating for profit are non-existant. The most important statement I can make is that my work is honest. If I can enrich the viewer, I am rewarded.
