Philadelphia Sculptors is proud to announce the twenty-second year of 5 into 1, its annual exhibition showcasing the works of emerging sculptors. The exhibition highlights the achievements and artistic merit of selected artists from five Philadelphia colleges and universities: Moore College of Art & Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Tyler School of Art and Architecture, The University of the Arts, and University of Pennsylvania. For the first time, the exhibition will be on display in the 1st Floor Atrium Gallery located at Tyler School of Art and Architecture, May 19th through June 11th.

Continuing its commitment to both emerging arts professionals and emerging artists, Philadelphia Sculptors has selected Patrick Cabry, Chenlin Cai, Ash Garner, Mandi Hall, Jacintha Kruc, and Carole Loeffler as this year’s curators. This year is special too in that the 5 Into 1 curators chose to select works from departments not solely dedicated to sculpture, focussing on students who choose to work in a way that promotes sculptural thinking and movement.

Exhibited in Tyler’s spacious 1st Floor Atrium Gallery, this year’s exhibition brings together a group of artists whose work employs situations of environmental and material consciousness and self-exploration – addressing concerns unique to each artist’s work and practice.

A figurative sculptress, Zofia Chamera challenges the idea of classical fine art materials, choosing instead to work in paper, bark, and other traditionally considered “craft” materials while Guava Rhee works in the digital realm challenging the idea of how sculpture is perceived. Work from Ruini Yu asks the viewer to question their role within the presence of her work, while Marley Massey Parsons comments on her own role in our environment and impact on the land we inhabit. Sculpting work from found and recycled materials, Sophie Semenza’s puppetry takes us on a journey through time, capturing moments that represent the history of American women in a variety of ways. Carolina Marín Hernández uses decorative ceramics, vibrant colors, and woven corn husks to explore self-identity and liberation within the social, cultural, and racial parameters that exist in Latinidad. Mukhtar Stones’ work takes inspiration from his interactions and experiences as a Black person growing up in Philadelphia and reflects upon those experiences through an afro surrealistic lens. Addressing the viewer's relationship to space and scale, Belle Jongmi Kim creates 'sacred' spaces that challenge the viewer's perspective on time, space, and ultimately oneself. Will Owen implies movement with graceful lines through space to create sculpture significant in scale. While viewing the work of Kyle Choy, the viewer has the sense that they encountered the work just a moment too late. The mediums and direction of each work vary greatly, yet they coalesce as a reflection of experiences within contemporary social, cultural, political and physical environments.

5 into 1 provides recent graduates with a special opportunity to exhibit their art in a professional setting, and presents the public with art by some of the best emerging artists in Philadelphia. This exhibition celebrates the strengths of young artists as credits to their individual institutions as it also reveals the impact made by a show of their combined works.

The 1st Floor Atrium Gallery is located in the Tyler School of Art and Architecture building at 2001 N. 13th St. in Philadelphia, with the entrance on W. Norris St.

Additional support for this exhibition is provided by Moore College of Art & Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The University of the Arts, University of Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia Sculptors.
