Kathleen Studebaker
I am a fabricator and all-around tinkerer, and make every element of each of my works by hand (no CNC machines, lasers, etc). Sometimes the pieces I create tell a story, more often they exist inside the context of one. I make objects that belong somewhere else, and have a story of their own. The AstroObjects are fantastical gadgets aimed at sparking the viewer’s imagination; they are machines of unknown purpose. Aesthetically, they are inspired by antique celestial navigation tools and laboratory equipment; formally, they echo the building blocks of the universe: from atomic structure to solar systems. SeedCircuit [1] is the first in a new body of work that explores the reproduction of lost things through digital means. Within its own story, it is a kind of cloning device; chipping away at the genetic sequence of the samples, and attempting to discover, perhaps even recreate, whatever unknown organisms they came from. GeoVine [decayed] & GeoGyro are both part of a larger show entitled The WasteLand: a pedestal-based installation that locates the viewer inside a museum of the ancient-future. Overall, the scene is one of post-apocalyptic mystery: the remnants of a lost civilization, quietly falling apart.
