Oars for Art

A collaborative exhibition with the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum

July 13 – October 7, 2018

Tired of the crowds at the Shore? Looking for something a bit different? How about a day trip to Havre de Grace, Maryland? Only a little over an hour away, this quaint town on the upper Chesapeake Bay was the temporary home to 17 sculptures that had their start as old wooden oars. Philadelphia Sculptors worked with the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum to create a unique experience for both artists and visitors. Once forgotten artifacts abandoned in the Museum, the oars have taken on a new identity as artworks.

Fifteen artists, including three PS members (Elfie Harris, Elizabeth Miller McCue, and Holly Smith), used the oars to reflect on the region’s culture, heritage, and environment. The oars were on display in commercial venues around Havre de Grace and then moved in September to the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum for a final reception and auction on October 7, 2018.
